# ML-KEM

ML-KEM, standardized as FIPS 203, is the NIST post-quantum key encapsulation mechanism based on module lattices, used to establish shared secrets over untrusted networks. Deployed today in hybrid mode with X25519, it protects transport encryption against future quantum decryption.

## Hybrid key exchange in production

Hybrid mode combines a classical curve with ML-KEM so the connection stays secure if either survives, the transition pattern recommended by standards bodies and already used across major internet infrastructure.

Taurus runs hybrid X25519 plus ML-KEM key agreement in production across SSH, TLS 1.3, and VPN connectivity, aligned with FIPS and CNSA guidance, countering harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks on institutional traffic.

FAQ:

- Why hybrid instead of pure ML-KEM? Defense in depth during the transition: if a flaw were found in either the classical or the post-quantum component, the other still protects the session. Standards guidance endorses hybrid deployment for exactly this reason.
