Custody and key management

Key backup and recovery

Key backup and recovery is the controlled duplication of private key material so that assets survive hardware failure, site loss, or disaster, and its controlled restoration under multi-person approval. In banking-grade custody, backups are encrypted, distributed, bank-controlled, and increasingly protected with quantum-safe encryption.

What separates a backup from a liability

A backup is only as strong as its weakest copy: it must be encrypted under keys that are themselves protected, split so no single custodian can restore alone, stored across locations and jurisdictions as policy requires, and tested through rehearsed recovery ceremonies.

Taurus applies quantum-safe encryption to backups, closing the harvest-now-decrypt-later exposure on archived key material, with restoration governed by the same quorum rules as signing.

Key backup and recovery, explained

Why do key backups need quantum-safe encryption already?
Because encrypted backups stolen today could be decrypted once quantum computers mature. Re-encrypting archives later does not help if copies were exfiltrated earlier, so long-lived key backups are among the first assets to migrate. Taurus backups are quantum-safe today.
